Give your jewellery back its shine - DIY version

Give your jewellery back its shine - DIY version

I have two pieces of jewellery that I never take off, my wedding ring and a ring that snuggles up next to it.

Because I wear them all the time they are affected by chlorine, soaps, and sea water.

So how I get them to sparkle again?

The answer is Citric Acid.

Found in the baking aisle of supermarkets, its a fantastic cleaning agent, its not harmful (used in jam making and sherbet) and is cheap and easy to get hold of.

What you need:

Access to a kettle

An empty jam jar / heat proof container

Tea spoon

Citric acid

Jewellery** you want to clean.

Clean cloth

Silver cloth

** This method is not for soft stones - if you have beautiful opals / shells in your jewellery please don't drop them into citric acid as they will absorb the liquid** skip this step!

1) Boil the kettle and pour a cup of hot water into your container

2)Measure and add one tea spoon of citric acid and stir until it dissolves

3) Separate your jewellery into type of metal taking care not to mix brass, copper, gold and silver - better to clean each in turn and wash the container between each.

4) Place the jewellery into the container and leave for 5 mins

5) Remove from the water and place onto a cloth - dry the jewellery.

6) Place your silver cloth on the table and stretch it out flat, hold it on the table, and use the other hand to rub the jewellery across the surface of the cloth.

The jewellery cloth will start to turn black in places, and your hands are likely to also start turning black as the oxide from the jewellery wears off and your piece starts to sparkle.
