Date: Sat 14 August
Venue: Eastern Hub, Geelong
Advanced class - choose your project:
1) Learn to set stones, or continue practicing
2) Create your own bangle in sterling silver
3) Create a spinner / meditation ring
Choose your project when you book so that I can ensure that I have the materials on hand for your project.
Stone setting - create a setting using thin fine silver to encapsulate your piece
Bangles - practise in brass or copper, texture and/or add a charm and then create in sterling silver.
Spinner rings - create a ring with satellite rings.
Spinner rings, meditation rings or fidget rings are a really great tactile piece of jewellery. I started to look into making them to help my son and myself with sensory overload, and having something that is subtle was really nice - as most sensory jewellery is bright colours or made of plastic.
Beyond sensory use, these rings are also really wonderful for meditative practise, the satellite rings spin freely on the wider band.
Making these rings requires some patience and experience with soldering.
In the course of the class you will design your ring - adding your own elements using stamps and texturing - practising first in copper or brass before moving on to creating your piece in sterling silver.
You will use soldering techniques, hammering, forging and will use a special tool to flare your ring.
These are fantastic rings for mixing metals - you can have a central ring of silver, and mix up metals using a combination of silver / copper / brass to make the satellite rings.
The class is a maximum of 4 people which allows for a lot of time with instructor and sharing with other participants. It is a fun and intimate environment.
You will learn hands on how to use different tools, and techniques to create your piece.
Sarah has a laid back teaching style, when she first handled tools she was nervous and a little bit concerned about burning holes in the carpet, or not being strong enough. With most tools a light touch is enough to create your work.
